New on DVD and Blu-ray: 'Epic' and More

Epic Fox

This week: See the beauty of a magical miniature world in the animated family film "Epic," which features the voices of Colin Farrell, Beyonce Knowles and many more.

Also new this week is this year's Best Foreign Language Film, "Amour"; Robert De Niro and John Travolta going mano a mano in "Killing Season"; and "Scary MoVie," the latest sequel in the unkillable horror spoof series.

'Epic'

Epic Fox

Box Office: $107 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 64% Fresh
Storyline: There is an ongoing battle deep in the forest between the forces of good and evil in this animated adventure from the creators of "Ice Age" and "Rio." When a teenage girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she bands together with a ragtag group of wild characters in order to save their world … and perhaps ours. "Epic" features the voices of Colin Farrell, Beyonce Knowles, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Knoxville, Aziz Ansari and Christoph Waltz.
Extras!
: Both the DVD and Blu-ray have the "Mub & Grub Intro," "Birds, Bugs and Slugs: Forest Explorer," "Rot Rocks," "Bugs of Camouflage," "The 'Epic' Life at Two Inches Tall" and "Mysteries of Moonhaven Revealed." There is also a 3D version available in the Blu-ray 3D combo pack.
We Say: If you're into super-clean-looking computer animation, your eyes will drink in the colorful miniature "Epic" landscape where people are small enough to ride hummingbirds and interact with talking slugs. The collective pixels are very pretty, especially in 3D, but the story of this fantasy forest isn't going to resonate with viewers in the two-digit age range — only the wee ones.

'Amour'

Amour Sony

Box Office: $6.7 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 94% Fresh
Storyline: Elderly couple Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) and Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) are retired music teachers with a daughter who lives abroad in this French-language drama directed by Michael Haneke. Anne suffers a stroke that paralyzes her right side and leaves her confined to a wheelchair. Anne makes Georges promise that he won't send her back to the hospital or a nursing home, but when Anne's condition further deteriorates, Georges struggles with keeping his word and doing what is best for his beloved wife.
Extras!: Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain "The Making of 'Amour'" and a Q&A with the director.
We Say: "Amour" won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Academy Awards and was nominated in four other categories, including Best Actress for Riva, the oldest nominee ever at age 85. It's her heartbreaking, powerful performance that makes "Amour" worth watching if you're looking for a good cry.

'Killing Season'

Killing Season Millennium

Box Office: $39,881
Rotten Tomatoes: 11% Rotten
Storyline: Robert De Niro plays a reclusive military veteran who lives deep in the Appalachian Mountains. One day he strikes up an unlikely friendship with a European tourist (John Travolta), though his true revenge-hungry intentions soon come to light and what follows is a one-on-one war with no rules. Milo Ventimiglia co-stars as De Niro's son.
Extras!: Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain a making-of featurette.
We Say: If you've ever wanted to see Travolta adopt a cringe-worthy Eastern European accent and chase down the Taxi Driver with a bow and arrow in the forest, boy, is this the flick for you. There isn't much more to "Killing Season" than a cat-and-mouse game between the acting titans that alternates between who has the upper hand in each scene until the two stop torturing each other and arrive at a conclusion that is singularly unsatisfying.

'Scary MoVie'

Scary MoVie The Weinstein Company

Box Office: $32 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 4% Rotten
Storyline: The latest entry in the never-ending horror-comedy series spoofs movies like "Paranormal Activity," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "The Evil Dead," "Black Swan" and more. The sequel stars Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Snoop Dogg, Katt Williams, Katrina Bowden, Kate Walsh, Heather Locklear, Simon Rex and Mike Tyson.
Extras!
: Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain 10 minutes of deleted and extended scenes.
We Say: The scariest thing about "Scary MoVie" is how painfully unfunny it is. The franchise has never reached for new comedic heights, but aside from an opening sequence with Sheen and Lohan where they poke fun at themselves, there is little to laugh about … or even "at." At least the four previous movies had Anna Faris and Regina Hall, whose wild-eyed enthusiasm made even the silliest jokes soar. Without them, leading lady Tisdale is thrown into scene after scene filled with desperate pop culture references, and the less talented actress is smothered by a carpet bomb of juvenile gags that she can't elevate like Faris and Hall could.

Also New This Week:

"An American Ghost Story"
"Death Hunt" Blu-ray
"No One Lives"
"Peter Pan Return to Neverland"
"Rapture-Palooza"
"Shadow Dancer"
"X-Ray"/"Schizoid" Blu-ray combo pack
